Dr. Abdulla Al Karam, Chairman of the Board of Directors and Director General of the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), is responsible for a wide spectrum of education in Dubai’s private sector, spanning early learning, school, and higher education and training Institutes. Dr. Abdulla has the distinction of holding key positions across the United Arab Emirates, as well as being a Board member of the National Qualifications Authority, of the UAE Federal Government. He was also appointed to the Board of the Social Sector, Government of Dubai. Why Happiness is the most important life skill you can teach your child...


The greatest wish any parent has for their child is that they live a happy and fulfilling life.

Yet, most of our efforts tend to focus on academic success and physical health. We teach them the value of working hard, eating well and exercising often. We visit the doctor, dentist, chiropractor, optician without a second thought when a physical problem arises, and we'll contact school when there is a problem with their learning. But when it comes to mental health, we simply don't have the same access to experts.

This is partly because, as parents and teachers, we simply don't have the knowledge, experience or ability to fully understand the issues going on inside our child's mind - and that is if they even choose to share their concerns with us in the first place.

Mental health disorders affect more people than other leading illnesses combined. Depression and anxiety are the greatest burden on our health service.

80% of those receiving treatment for mental health issue, including anxiety and depression, respond to the treatment. But unfortunately, most people (adults and children) never receive any treatment at all.

Yet there is hope: Research shows that happiness can be learned! Positive skills and habits, some of which we will learn at this summit, endow us with the tools to understand our emotions, and can actually *prevent* depression and mental health issues from taking full form.

We can teach our kids (and ourselves!) the skills they need to fend off negative mental health issues before they fully develop.
